Brackett joins list of injured Colts
The premise seemed so unfathomable, Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy had to repeat it three times.

In the wake of a leg injury to defensive captain and starting middle linebacker Gary Brackett, Dungy's plan is to start Buster Davis on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"Right now, our plan is to leave everybody where they are and just plug in the next man," Dungy said of Davis, 25, who has gotten on the field in only two games and been inactive for nine.

"He's a powerful guy and has done ... a good job in practice. He just hasn't had a chance to play much in games."

Dungy said the Colts (8-4) could move Freddy Keiaho from weakside linebacker to inside linebacker, then plug Tyjuan Hagler into Keiaho's place. Hagler was expected to be a starter this season at strongside linebacker before a pectoral injury in the summer.

"(But) we were in this situation the last time we played Cincinnati in 2006," Dungy said. "Our starting safeties were hurt and we had Matt Giordano and Dexter Reid both make their first starts and they both played pretty well. We had thought about shifting other guys in, moving Kelvin Hayden (from cornerback) and things like that, but we ended up just playing the guys who had practiced there the most and they did a good job. I think we can look at that and think it's the blueprint."

Brackett is expected to miss at least two weeks, but the Colts hope he'll be ready for the playoffs. While the team initially said he had suffered an ankle injury in last weekend's 10-6 victory at Cleveland, it now said he has a broken bone in his lower leg. Brackett has a team-high 113 tackles this season.

Dungy said either Davis or Keiaho would call defensive signals against the Bengals (1-10-1). Davis, who played at Florida State, was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2007 draft but was released. He spent the 2007 season with the Detroit Lions, mostly on the practice squad, and was cut in August.

Brackett's injury isn't the only one causing changes in the lineup. Defensive tackle Keyunta Dawson, who injured his hamstring at Cleveland, won't play Sunday and will probably be replaced by Darrell Reid. Safety Bob Sanders, who has missed three games with a knee injury, is questionable and would again be spelled by Melvin Bullitt.

And center Jeff Saturday, who missed the Cleveland game with a calf injury, is also a question mark. Rookie Jamey Richard started for him against the Browns, as the Colts failed to score an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2003.

"If I feel good, you talk it over and it kind of comes down to the head man, how Dungy feels about it and how the trainers feel about it," Saturday said. "To a degree, they want to take the player's emotions out of it and I understand that. Whatever they tell me to do, I'll go out and do it."

Notes: DefensiveRobert Mathis, who had two sacks and a fourth-quarter 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, was selected AFC Defensive Player of the Week. ... The Colts signed linebacker Rufus Alexander, waived wide receiver Taj Smith and moved defensive back Brandon Foster to the practice squad.
