BAGSHOT, England (AP) - While everyone on the San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints got a free trip to London for their regular-season NFL game on Sunday, Jason Brisbane got a free trip home.
The 25-year-old Londoner is a linebacker with the Chargers practice squad, which means he gets to suit up and train with the team but doesn't play in the game.
That hasn't dampened his excitement ahead of the second NFL game to be played at Wembley Stadium in the last two seasons.
"It's a great feeling to actually get to the NFL, and then to get to be on the team that gets to play in this historic game," Brisbane said Wednesday, after the team's first practice session since arriving in England on Monday.
Brisbane started playing football when he was 17, and was named the MVP of the British American Football League in 2004.
Through a developmental program run by the NFL to find overseas talent, Brisbane was able to attend a combine in January and some camps designed to allocate non-Americans to NFL teams.
"It allows me concentrate and become a better player," said Brisbane, who dreams of someday making it onto an NFL roster. "That's the whole point, to get myself in a position to be able to do that."
Brisbane, who started playing the game through a friend, said he had seen American football on television but never really understood the rules.
"But as soon as I went down to my first training session, I loved it," he said.
The plan now is to continue to improve with the help of the Chargers, and one day get a game-day uniform and a chance to play in the NFL.
"I still feel like I have a lot of work to do," Brisbane said. "This time next year I'll be in a much better position."
Even though he's not expected to play a down on Sunday at Wembley - the home of England's national football team - he's been helping his teammates adjust to the new surroundings, even when it comes to answering some bizarre questions about his homeland.
"Some guys have asked can I introduce them to the Queen," Brisbane said with a laugh, before relaying what he has answered. "You can't just meet the Queen."
