San Diego Chargers Notes, Quotes 2009-03-11
--RB LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers have agreed to a restructured contract that will keep the running back in San Diego next season. Yahoo! Sports reported that the new contract includes the same $6.725 million Tomlinson was due to earn next year, but restructures the final two years of the deal. His base salaries of $98 million (2010) and $9.275 (2011) will be reduced. If the teams had not been able to reach a new agreement, Tomlinson would have been released.

"I love San Diego and being a part of this team with my teammates," Tomlinson said in a statement released by the team. "My No. 1 priority was to stay here in San Diego. I truly believe this is the place that gives me the best chance to be successful and win a championship. I want to finish the job we started when I got here eight years ago. My heart has always been in San Diego. I couldn't imagine putting on another uniform."

General manager A.J. Smith told the Associated Press: "The way I'm looking at it, L.T. has helped us on the field and now he's gone a step further and he's helped us off the field. I'm just happy that it worked out," Smith said. "I felt comfortable that it had a chance. We wanted him back, he wanted to come back. Everything was as smooth as it can be in negotiations."

--Why did the Chargers get crushed by the Steelers in the players, one step shy of their second straight AFC Championship Game? "We're not good enough to take on the big boys," Smith said.

--DE Igor Olshansky, a former second round pick who was allowed to flee, signed with Dallas to fill Chris Canty's role.

--CB Quentin Jammer, the Chargers' man of the year, took some 80 kids from a local foster home to see the Harlem Globetrotters play.

--There is nothing new to report regarding the Chargers locating a new site where to build a stadium. Chula Vista, a San Diego suburb, remains interested but a move there seems to have very traction. Meanwhile, plans to build and NFL stadium some 100 miles in the Los Angeles suburb of Industry continue.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We got some guys that need to step up. You give people opportunities, but a lot of guys are on notice." -- GM A.J. Smith of some of his underachieving players facing a make-or-break season.
